The accuracy of the tests was the greatest when muscle weakness was interpreted as indicating a torn supraspinatus tendon in both the full can test 75 accurate and the empty can test 70 accurate. These tests examine the amount of translation allowed by the shoulder starting from positions where the ligaments are normally loose.

The empty can test or Jobes test is used to identify subacromial impingement as well as integrity of the supraspinatus muscle. Technique edit edit source The patient can be seated or standing for this test holding their arm in 90 of elevation in scapular plane 30 anterior to the frontal plane with full external rotation of the glenohumeral joint. If the patient complains of pain when the arm is between 180 and 150 the test is considered positive for AC joint injury.

The test is performed as follows. Painful arc between 150-180. Many normally stable shoulders such as those of gymnasts will demonstrate substantial translation on these laxity tests even though they are asymptomatic.

The empty can test is used to assess for supraspinatus rupture dysfunction by stressing the supraspinatus. The test should be performed bilaterally to compare the stability and strength of the patients shoulders. The Empty Can test is a screening tool for tears of the supraspinatus muscle or tendon.

Muscle weakness should be interpreted as indicative of supraspinatus tendon tear. The patient is instructed to abduct the interested shoulder to 180. Pain was observed in 62 shoulders 43 during the full can test and in 71 shoulders 50 during the empty can test but the difference was not statistically significant.

Have the patient internally rotate at the shoulder as if. A positive test indicates a tear to the supraspinatus tendon or muscle and can also indicate a neuropathy of the suprascapular nerve. However there was no significant difference between the accuracy of the tests when this criterion was used.
